> WEEK 2
CLASS 1 – Monday, 13 January 2014
Section 1: Lecture
Notes: (pg. 110-111)
-
In the 1900s, people thought that expanding
their Empire overseas is their main priority for power.
-
France and Britain had the largest Empire in the
World at that time.
-
But soon, smaller countries had wanted to make
their own superpower Empire such as Italy and Germany.
-
There was a scramble of territory especially in
Africa.
-
Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany wanted to
make Germany a superpower country.
-
The competition of colonies could lead to minor
disputes such as France and Germany over Morocco.
-
They wanted the world to be influenced by their
Empire so they had wanted to affect the whole world by expanding their army.
-
Germany and Italy had become united as one
country in order to expand its territory.
-
There was an old saying that “To be a great
nation you must colonise” which is picked up by people all across the world.
-
A large Empire is important not only for trade
but also for prestige.
Section 2: Discussion
& Reflection:
-
Expansion of Empires is vital
-
Every country had agreed to overseas Empire,
there was no such thing as war at that time but minor disputes.
-
British demand that their navy should remain the
largest.
-
Britain, France, Russia, Germany Austria and
Italy began expanding its territory, but still the main superpower was Britain
and France.
Section 3: Homework:
Prepare for the my LdL next week.
CLASS 2 – Friday, 17 January 2014
Section 1: Lecture
Notes: (pg. 112-113)
-
People formed alliances, and colonies cannot
stands alone. We have many things that make the alliances unstable. This is the
cause of the Domino Effect. Germany was small and independent. French is a big
country and have been fighting the British for hundreds of years. So the
Germany is scared that the French will come and invade their country. Germany
is still developing into a country.
-
In 1904, France then make an alliance with
Russia and Britain (after being their enemy for long)
-
There were three alliances; there are the
Entente and the Alliance. The Entente consists of the Russia, France and
Britain. While the Alliance consists of the Italy, Austria and Germany. They all create Alliance so that they could
aid each other when one of them gets invaded. The Entente’s motive is to
prevent Germany from taking all over Europe.
-
The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the
USA, their plan is to discourage each other into thinking twice before
attacking each other by seeing who has more military powers. While the Hot War
involves bullets and guns.
-
Britain cannot build that much ships even though
it has a big Empire. And Germany could create more ships than Britain did,
since the Germany still wanted to colonize and become a great nation, the
British feared that the Germany could come and invade their big Empire.
-
The only time Ferdinand and Sophie could be
together was their time in Sarajevo. This is the time where it creates a SPARK
for the WWI. It happened when Ferdinand and Sophie was murdered as they were
getting out from a building by the Serbs who wanted the Bosnian to leave
Austria and joins the independent Serbia instead. The Serbs are known as the
Black Hand
-
The Black Hand is a group of terrorist that want
to destabilize the relationship between Serbia, Hungary and Sarajevo, they are
all dying and under tuberculosis.
-
THE CHAIN REACTION:
-
28th July: Austria blames
assassination on the Serbian government; they were supposed to be alliances. So
they launch an attack on Serbia.
-
29th July: Russia prepared its army;
it has promised Serbia to protect its country from any Austrian attacks.
-
1th August: Germany hears about Russian
preparations and challenges Russia to war.
-
2th August: Britain organizes its warships.
-
3th August: Germany declares war on France.
-
4th August: Germany troops march to
Belgium. Belgium and Britain declares war on Germany.
-
6th August: Austria declares war on
Russia.
-
12th: Britain and France declares war
on Austria.
WWI Begins.
Section 2: Discussion
& Reflection:
- NO TEACHING TODAY, MOVED TO NEXT MONDAY (two people will
teach)
Section 3: Homework: Give
me the relationship between the assassination attempt in Sarajevo in the last
twenty years! Check the Bosnia, Serbian and Sarajevo.
RESEARCH:
The assassination of Ferdinand Archduke by the Serbs of the
Black Hand begins because the young Serbs had wanted Bosnia to be united with
Serbian as a country and not joining the Austrian Empire. While Ferdinand
Archduke, a prince of Austria is shot to pay the revenge. This assassination
attempt created a spark for the World War I. While visiting Sarajevo, Prince
Ferdinand and Sophie; his wife is murdered.

ATTTUDE DURING WAR:
There were two World War; that kill more Europeans. They
left millions of economies broken and killed. Europe has been dynamic and by
1945, it has been reduced from the start since the war. Europe will never again
take the respondent. People cannot imagine what the war will be like. Winston Churchill,
Germania, Italian broke the balance and cause a deadly avalanche. They cheered
for the war on all major cities London, Paris and Berlin. And so the ar
beginsthose wdid not die, ie of the freezing cold in the trenches and get their
body parts amputated due ot the inefection. Thwy gained an early advantage
during the first ww by colonizing places. Over 8 million European sided in the
battlefield. All the countries sacrifice 16% of the male population. After the
ar it had killed two to third of the population. President Woodrow Wilson had
agreed to make peace within the war. He cannot convice his allies too make
peace for the war. Europe was unsettled and the map has altered. It gets
fdestoryed aurstria, german and … total four empires collapse. The fought the
reunification of their bravery. The most significant in 1917, there were t
successful recolution, and brought thwo successful democraties. In 1917, the
Russians army is diinterfrating an they are no match fo the german war. They
signed a peace in the city ,a dn the western Austria to Germany.. 10 million peasanrs wewre killed and
tortured in Russian. This is the first war thst they used mechanical weapons,
where they have tanks, trenches, guns and cannons. They have to go underground,
creating trenches but then they were stuck in the trenches for years. They
fought underground.
Section 2: Discussion
and Reflection:
The stage is set for war. There were the triple alliance and
the triple entente. They formed alliance so that they could ally each other for
the war. It start when the Austrian prince was killed when he was visiting the
Serbia. They are an ally but then the Austria thought that the Serbia betrays
them. The Russia then support the Serbia since they are going to promise them
that they are going to protect them when something happen. Germany activated
the Schneifen Plan to defeat France and Russia. Belgium refused as the Germany
came to their area. Britain had a long term agreement with
Section 3:
Homework:
Prepare for the next LdL and the usual conference.
> WEEK 4
CLASS 1 – Monday, 27 January 2014
Section 1: Lecture
Notes:
In 1914, Phillips had an ambition to destroy the stability
through terrorism. The WWI is more devastating than any other war that the
Earth has ever seen. It shaped the 21st century and shapes the
European Revolution. 20 years later, the Cold War happens. Serbian sends the
Turks out from their country. They wanted freedom and take our language away
from us. Austria and Hungary are a part of the multinational countries. In
1955, there was a massive demonstration on Austria. Serbian wanted to break the
Empire, particularly in Russia and Bosnia. There were rioting and revolution
that happens Austria and Hungary, they are actually 2 kingdoms. The Hapsburgs
area actually the one who has controlled Asutria and Hungary for a long time.
Ferdinand, his uncle was both the King and Emperor of Asutra- Hungary who sat
on two throns. Their relationship was shkay, they were many types of people
there, crashing and colliding. French Joseph 60 years, and everybody wwas ready
to change. The Ottoman Empire was dying, created by the Turks. Back in the day,
we foind that the Turks and the Muslim groups, thousand of years ago moving
towards Europe. They were trying to move from Asia towards Europe on the
Byzantine era. The Ottoman Empire stops growing since there were soldiers
blocking the bound, it created stress for the alliances that they have a broken
state with the Triple Alliance. Italy switched sides in 1915 and joined the
Triple Entente.
Section 2: Discussion
and Reflection:
At the end of the WWI, Woodrow Wilson, they created the
treaty of an agreement. Each of the Big three had an idea to see what they want
to achieve. They all wanted to punish the Germans for what they did in the WWI;
France wanted to punish the Germany. Britain wanted to make a peace. They
wanted to make the fourteen points the Britain Prime Minister had make. Only
volunteers could join the army, they are not allowed to keep tanks. Rhineland
cannot be accessed by the Germany and stationed there for fifteen years. Term
of Germany overseas. Germany was not longer suppressed. Many parts of Germany
get taken away and given to the allies. Germany thought that this term was very
unfair, but they must accept it or not they would start a war between the
allies.

Section 1: Lecture
Notes:
People are over the world are moving from a democratic
country into a dictatorship country where Fascism ruled over the country.
People had starts to think that democracy doesn’t work anymore for them.
Fascist government became dictatorship; they organize the country using
military-like government. So around the 1930s-1940s dictatorship began to rise.
Everybody, including the people in the government must follow the same laws in
a democratic country. The freedom in a democratic country must still follow the
law.
Japan, Germany, Italy, USSR (Russia): dictatorship
Mussolini develop a military fascism in Italy, while Stalin
in USSR began to spread Communism throughout the country and in Germany, Hitler
began to rise.
Japanese began to invade China through Korea and Manchuria
during the reign of the last Emperor. The Japanese colonized Korea. Pu Yi, the
last emperor began to create an alliance with the Japan thinking that they
could help them. But later on, the Nationalist Party began to move away to
Taiwan while China governs its country in Communism.
Section 2: Discussion
& Reflection
> Note taking during LdL 3
-
Dictatorship has begins to spread around the
world. Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin are the main dictatorship
on Europe.
-
Features on Democracy: everyone can vote.
-
Italy had become more like Russia, since the
First World War. Its economy went down and people were suffering badly. Benito
Mussolini began his dictatorship; the President made him Prime Minister and
promise to change Italy into a better country.
-
Adolf Hitler- Germany’s dictatorship and wanted
revenge from the ToV since Germany get all the punishment and blame; he made
his own way of Fascism called Nazism.
-
Benito Mussolini – communist, only one leader.
He would kill anyone, which seem like a threat to him.
Section 3: Homework:
-
Create a presentation for Week 11’s Class 2 –
Rise of the dictators
-
Do research on why did Russia become a
Communist?
CLASS 2 – Friday, 21 March 2014:
Section 1: Lecture
Notes:
Prior, to the WW! Germany and France are a territorial war.
They have no moral thing, but after the establishment of the ToV, they start
having moral standards for the other. Germany is under stress/load from the
ToV, everything that will happen on the next 20 years will be linked to what
happen during the signing of the ToV.
Weimar Republic: baby republic, which was just getting
started but was crashed because of global economic problems. They need to pay
massive payment to France.
Saar – this area is taken from the Germany and was given to
France and all other new countries that were starting to form. They created a
new country around Germany to prevent them from taking any more territory and
yet they still need to pay the huge reparation. Germany finally collapsed.
1920s - the Nazis party began to form. Hitler was just a
corporal and only a foot soldier at that time. He wanted to become an artist
and started to paint, he was failing miserably.
It began as a group of 20 people who was friends and went together to
drink after work. But then, they began to grow slowly. They were a neo-army and
they were pretending to be a real military by wearing brown uniforms.
He wrote a book while he was in prison called Mein Kampf.
Then, they started to join the Reichstag (Parliament). They were eliminating
any political parties especially the Communists. Hitler was improving Germany
in many aspects; everybody has a job and was having a normal standard of
living.
Maintaining a democratic country requires risk but it is the
most balanced form of ideology. It was so delicate that the Fascism does not
like that.
In 1935, Hitler proclaimed that he will not pay any more war
damage and will be developing their country.
Section 2: Discussion

CLASS 2 – FRIDAY, 04 APRIL 2014
Section 1: Lecture
Notes:
-
1933: within 3 days of becoming leader of
Germany. Hitler announces his rearmament policy to his military leaders.
-
1935: Hitler no longer bothered to keep
rearmament a secret. He organized a massive rally in Berlin to proclaim
rearmament to the world. Signed naval agreement with Britain to allow increase
of its navy to 35% to the size of the British navy.
-
1936: Conscriptions needed. Factories were
converted into creating military weapons.
-
1937: Spanish Civil War as a test of technology,
to show the world its edge
-
1938: Hitler took over a command of the armed
forces
-
1939: German had only three months supply of
aircraft fuel
-
1939: War against Britain and France begins,
Germany had fewer tanks and production was slow.
Hitler was a liar; he was actually renowned to be a leader
of Germany and the leader whom will bring Germany out of hardships. He actually
did this to get the German’s support. But then, he lied to the rest of the
world whom known him to be the hero of the world. But his true motive was:
World Dominion/ European Dominion.
The reason Germany lost in the Second World War was that
Russia and America had faster production of tanks.
The Germans created the STUKA’s dive-bomber.
Megalomaniac – Hitler fooled the world into thinking that he
was bigger than he really was.
Hitler was very smart since he was able to take over
governments and any other countries by first creating a problem, pretends to
solve the problem and once everyone had trust them that they could solve it.
They took over the entire government such as Austria and Czechoslovakia where
some Germans are trapped there and is not happy about it.
Appeasement: when you please a bully to prevent him from
threatening you.
Section 2: Discussion
and Reflection:
Hitler’s War
Hitler’s war was started on 1933 and it was called Hitler’s
personal war. It was a six-year war and was called Hitler’s war because he
tried to bluff, created secret rearmament and choose the correct time on when
the war had started. For Britain, it was a shame for them after the events of
World War One, which shamed the British. He also wanted to prove Germany that
he could. If he did not start the War and lied to the whole world, he could
have been a great hero.
He wanted to take over all the countries in Europe. He use
attack, penetrates and move around in circles, this the way on how they attack
which they invade another country by scaring you.
They had the most advanced plane where they could just drop
the bomb as they want where the rest of the countries can just anticipate. His
main goal is to scare other countries and want other countries and make them
think that they have bigger army than they think. They lost most of their troop
in the First World War.

Section 1: Lecture
Notes:
Feelings of the German people during the time period
1933-1938:
There are genuine awe and worship of the German people
towards Hitler because of his dictatorship in just those four years. He
entirely rebuilds Germany from zero to hero after the First World War.
One of the ways he improve this economy is by: the amount of
income tax, the state had given in had trebled to supply the countries’
military strengths and for the government. Farms were being planted by
everyone. The government had trained everyone to do every thing. Everyone had
earned a skill. The country became a production country rather than a consumer country.
People are being told to help the other people, which are in worse condition
than the other. Everybody always have a job in the military unit supplied by
the government. They had never even borrowed money from other country; their
job was to only produce things that are needed.
The Polish Corridor, the SAR, the Rhineland are all belong
to Germany. These are the people originating from Germany. The leftover people
there didn’t like being the minority of the country there since Germany has
been hacked off.
Stalin had made an agreement with Hitler to make an ally so
that they could have Poland and divide it into two since Poland is a part of
Germany in the first place. Stalin’s goal was to bring everyone into War, he
wanted Germany to attack Britain and France, Poland and every country. He also
wanted the whole Europe to be on War so that they all could be tired and Stalin
could take the whole of Europe and spread Communism to the country.

-
Appeasement: allowing Hitler to retake the lost

-
Liebenshraum: living spaces, gaining the lost
land of Hitler. Their mission are to bring the German people that are stuck
from other countries back home, in order to recover their land and their people
-
Anshluss: the annacsation of Austria
-
Volksgemeinschaft: the people and community,
-
The Pollish Corridor is the problem, the
Sudetenland, the Ruhr, The Rhine and the Tsar is also a problem. The Germans
that are still living on that area were trapped in the other countries since
the land are given to other countries at that time. Most of its productive land
was given to neighboring countries.
Hyper-inflation had bring down the Weimar
Republic because of them printing excessive amount of money for nothing.
In order to rebuild Germany, there must not
be any division of classes and everyone must share the workload.

was visiting Sarajevo in Bosnia (bring back any recent memories??). Many Serbs
wanted Bosnia to leave the Austrian Empire and join with neighboring Serbia,
who ruled itself. As Franz and his wife drove along a riverside, they were both
shot by a crazed Serb. This started a chain reaction, that within 1 month, had
Europe in a war.

soldiers on borders, fearing attack from Germany!
· Vast Austrian Empire in danger of
falling apart, some looking for independence, needed a strong ally.

group, so in this year, the “Triple Alliance” was formed.
· 1893, France formed an alliance with
Russia, both fearing Germany and the “TA”.
· 1904, IN the past, France had been a
rival of Britain. Britain was worried about growing German power. In this year,
France and Britain kiss and make up.
· 1907, Britain and Russia make a
similar agreement, and the “Triple Entente” was formed.
· The British motive was to prevent
Germany from taking over all of Europe. Germany responded that the Triple
Entente had been formed to surround and threaten Germany.

on the Serbian government, and uses it as a pretext to launch an attack on

§ The Cold War
(1953–1962) discusses the
period within the Cold War from the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1953 to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Following the death of Stalin unrest occurred in the Eastern Bloc, while there was a calming
of international tensions, the evidence of which can be seen in the signing of
the Austrian State Treaty reuniting Austria, and the Geneva Accords ending fighting in Indochina. However, this "thaw" was
only partial with an expensive arms race continuing during the period. (Source Wikipedia)

§ Was the
treaty a mistake ? (pg 116-117)
· At the end of WWI, a peace treaty was
drawn up at Versailles. Most of the decisions were made by the “Big 3”: Woodrow
Wilson (US President), David Lloyd George (UK Prime Minister), and Georges
Clemenceau (French Prime Minister). Each had his own ideas about how things
should go.
· No one from Germany or Austria was
allowed to take part in the negotiations.
· The USA had suffered less than Europe
in the war, and had come in much later. Wilson believed that by punishing
Germany would only make Germany want revenge, causing more trouble in the
future. He drew up 14 points which he felt would bring about world peace. He
wanted Poland and Czechoslovakia, near Germany, to become strong and
independent. He wanted France to feel
safe, and he wanted to establish a League of Nations to protect world peace.
· France wanted Germany punished. Much
of the war had taken place in France. The damage was tremendous. 750,000 homes
and 23,000 factories destroyed. 1,500,000 Frenchmen dead. Clemenceau wanted to
punish Germany and hold them accountable for all of this… and wanted
compensation. He also wanted to be assured that France was safe from another
attack, esp. from Germany.
· Britain wanted to make a fair
settlement. Lloyd George agreed with much of
Wilson’s plan, but the British public
was demanding that Germany be harshly punished.
·

June 28,1919, the treaty was signed

food to eat. Imagine how Hitler changed Germany and because of that, many
thanked him for what He did to them.

Volksgemeinschaft = peoples

The ToV took German’s land
away, there are still Germans who used to live in a German area, but it was
taken away so they did not live there anymore.
Germany really developed
really well in the hands of Hitler and his speech makes people awaken, they
helped each other so in four years Germany was a totally different country than
before, before Hitler ruled, Germany was a poor and did not developed very much
in other Leaders.
But when Hitler ruled, Germany was a totally different
country from nothing to something, from zero to hero. Because of Hitler’s
speech, German’s people began to realize and began to help each other to be a
develop country and the Nazis party saved a lots and lots of people. But Hitler
made a mistake and now Hitler is known as the bad guy in History. The problem
is that, Hitler was so arrogant and the first problem is that the rich person
does not want to work together with the poor people because of the rich
people’s so arrogant.
